YORK 2020

Three weeks of Drawing & Painting in August for all levels of ability

Enjoy a week (or three) of drawing and painting in a relaxed, supportive and socially distanced atmosphere.

10th - 28th August 2020 Monday-Friday.

Your tutor Colin Black MA (RCA) has over thirty years of teaching experience. Each week will feature a short slide lecture, complemented by practical demonstrations of methods and materials.

"I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to take their creativity further"

"As a beginner I have found the classes both instructive and inspiring. Colin guides our work with care, lending us his obvious love and knowledge of art. I look forward to each new lesson."

"I came to art late and had been doing very little. I booked onto the summer school and I wasn't disappointed. Colin's explanations and demonstrations very accessible and he has a wealth of experience and skill to share. I'm hoping, for myself, that this will prove a bit of a watershed."

All materials and tea and coffee included in the price of £290 for each week.

Each day runs from 9.30am – 4.30pm. Lunch (not provided) 1 – 2pm. Mondays and Tuesdays each week are on location.

Week 1 Monday 10th – Friday 14th August

Sacred Spaces

The interior spaces of York Minster will be our focus for this inspirational week. Learning how to use perspective effectively will give you the confidence to capture three-dimensional space and convey the ever-changing light and colour patterns throughout the day. Exercises in light and shade, using washes and glazes, and mixing different colour palettes will collectively give you the ability to produce a final piece that conveys ‘the spirit of the place.’ Admission fee to the Minster on the two days on location is included in the price of the course.

All materials and refreshments are provided and included in the price.

Week 2 Monday 17th – Friday 21st August

Nature in the City

York Museum’s Botanical Gardens in the heart of the city will be our inspiration for the week. Its mature trees, Roman ruins and Medieval Abbey will serve as a backdrop for exploring nature in all its diversity. You will be working with a rich variety of drawing and painting materials throughout the week. Demonstrations in colour-mixing, composition and tips on the practical use of materials will be given. You will also be taught how to develop your location-based studies into resolved finished pieces back in the studio without losing any of their original spontaneity.

All materials and refreshments are provided and included in the price.

Week 3 Monday 24th – Friday 28th August

Precious Objects

York Art Gallery houses CoCa, Centre of Ceramic Art, the largest collection of British studio ceramics in the UK. We will draw from this collection located in the light and airy upstairs gallery using a variety of ‘dry’ materials including pencil, graphite, oil and chalk pastels. You will learn how to learn how to gather a wealth of visual research to take back to the studio and  work up into a series of developmental pieces and then leading to finished paintings. Practical demonstrations will be given throughout the week, being taught how to use composition effectively through both black and white and colour media. Admission fee included.

All materials and refreshments are provided and included in the price.
