Artwork by Colin Black

Your tutor Colin Black MA (RCA) has over thirty years of teaching experience and a short slide lecture will introduce each week, complemented by practical demonstrations of methods and materials.

"As a beginner I have found the classes both instructive and inspiring. Colin guides our work with care, lending us his obvious love and knowledge of art. I look forward to each new lesson."

"I came to art late and had been doing very little. I booked onto the summer school and I wasn't disappointed. Colin's explanations and demonstrations very accessible and he has a wealth of experience and skill to share. I'm hoping, for myself, that this will prove a bit of a watershed."

Week 1 Monday 12 - Friday 16 August

Painting in the city, drawing on history

Taking our inspiration from the historic walled city of York, we will begin the week drawing on location. From this gathered material, students will develop their work through pastel and paint, exploring colour and compositional possibilities within the studio. Students will learn to build up an image through layers of washes and glazes to achieve depth to the picture’s surface. The culmination to the week will be in producing a resolved final painting that conveys the required mood.

All materials and refreshments are provided and included in the price.

Week 2 Monday 19 - Friday 23 August

On the waterfront

The bridges over the River Ouse in York give us the subject matter for this inspirational week.  Initially working on location, you will have the opportunity to collect the valuable visual information from the changing nature of water and its reflective qualities, to the immovable bridge structures that span it and link the city together.  The subsequent three days of  studio-based work will give you the opportunity to develop these initial studies through a variety of drawing and painting media.  Through the creative process of evaluation and experimentation, your work will display your own personal touch.

All materials and refreshments are provided and included in the price.

Week 3 Monday 26 - Friday 30 August

The nature of nature

The rich diversity of nature will be our focus for this week of drawing and painting. Rowntree Park off Bishopthorpe Road will give us our location to study nature from the traditional order of a Victorian park. In contrast, we will capture its seemingly chaotic abundance, giving order through exploring the fundamentals of composition, colour balance, linear and tonal structure and rhythm. We will use a variety of media including pencil, pastel, oil and acrylic paint to explore the diversity of natural growth. The majority of the week will be spent in our well-resourced local studio. You will produce a final piece that consolidates your visual investigations from the week.

All materials and refreshments are provided and included in the price.
